Support for Children of Addicted Parents
Here at The Hinckley Foundation, we know that growing up with an addicted parent can make the transition to adulthood and independence a challenge that shouldn't be faced alone. We believe that every child of an addicted parent deserves to have someone who will fight for them and help them succeed in whatever they choose to achieve.
WHO WE ARE
A New and Different Non-Profit
As a new non-profit, we want to approach the problem of substance abuse from a different angle. The current school of thought about addiction has lead many organizations to focus on treating the substance abuser. Those most affected by the addict, it is assumed by these groups, will get better when the addict is sober. But, what if the damage has been done? A study done by Cornell College estimates that adult children of alcoholics are 2 to 4 times more likely to become addicted to a substance in their lifetime. These children are less likely to do well in school, more likely to marry another addict and more likely to become mentally ill than children who don't have addicted parents. Let's change the future for them! Our mission is to provide professional development opportunities, a strong and supportive community, and the opportunity to attend college or trade school for young adults with one or more parents with a substance abuse issue.
OUR GOALS
COMMUNITY
We want to provide a supportive community for children of addicted parents through social media and in-person events that bring together young adults who are facing the same trials and asking the same questions about their futures.
CONFERENCES
Often times, children of addicts are not equipped with some of the skills and knowledge needed to thrive outside their parent's home. Our conference will help them learn how to be successful in the workplace, how to handle the stress placed on them by family relationships and the knowledge needed to excel in post-secondary education.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The uncomfortable truth is that most addicts will face financial instability because of their addiction. This makes it that much harder for their children to become financially independent after high school. Paying for college or paying rent seem impossible. We want to help children of addicts get the education they need to break the cycle and become self-reliant.
